Biohm, a London biotech and biomanufacturing startup,
+ has created a line of sustainable lampshades called
Obscure that are made of 100 percent coffee chaff and
orange peel. For these lampshades, Biohm has used a
material they call Orb, or organic refuse biocompound,
to combine food and agricultural bioproducts with a
ART plant-based binder. Orb can be molded or formed into
sheets to create products such as lampshades. Obscure
is inspired by nature's geometric shapes and is born
out of environmental intentions.

BALANCE Ros ana Escobar, a graduate of the Design Academy
Eindhoven in the Netherlands, is reimagining use of the
humble coffee bag. Escobar cooperates with local fique
producers, recycling the discarded coffee bags, then
unravelling the woven fabric to create hair-like fibres to
make benches and stools. Meanwhile, Escobar found as
the fique is combed, it creates a "kind of fluff" byproduct,
which Escobar has turned into felt to create rugs. She also
developed a project, titled Unravelling the Coffee Bag,
for the bachelor degree programme at Design Academy
Eindhoven (DAE) in the Netherlands. She wants to give
a voice to this material, to produce new products that
could give new narratives and could make people connect
with the fiber differently.

Tulum, a boutique coffee company based in Mumbai,
India was launched by founder Pallav Haria in 2020,
using the brewing and roasting methods he learned
in Mexico. The boho-style Tulum bags made by a
designer specializing in textiles, used elements like
dots, lines, curves, and circles in the design,
interpreting them as sand and waves, bubbles in the
sea. The Tulum bags are made out of canvas, with a
velcro closure, and are both beautiful and reusable. It
