BOURBON
Varietal : Bourbon
(AKA: Red Bourbon,
Kenya, SL34, and SL28)
Origin : Bourbon Island
Grows best at : above 800 MASL
Prevalent in : All over the coffee grow-
ing world
Physical differences : Bourbon is quite com-
pact and upright grow-
ing with red and yellow
fruited. It has less of a
conical shape than Ty-
pica coffee plants. The
angles between the sec-
ondary branches and the
main stem are smaller,
and the branch points
on the main stem are
closely spaced. The
leaves are broad and
wavy on the edges. The
fruit is relatively smaller
and denser.
Predominant Color : Red yellow and orange
but mainly red
Fruit size : Normal rounded
Leaf Characteristics : Wide and short
Introduced around 1715 from Yemen
into Reunion Island (formerly Bourbon) and
then into Latin America and East Africa. There
is some evidence that Yellow Bourbon gives a
higher yield compared to its red and orange
derivatives, although red is the most widespread.
This varietal has many sub - varietalsie.
SL28 or SL34 .At risk of pest and disease, and
decidedly average in terms of yield, but the
cup profile tends to be anything BUT average.
Its flavor profile is famous for nutty, chocolaty,
low body, balanced, with a typically sweet
