From then on, the couple has continued to innovate and
surprise their customers with new ways to enjoy ice cream. Some
of their most popular creations include:
The Wearable Ice Cream Cones–These are small cones
that can be worn on your fingers like rings or just as a funny spin
on finger food.
The Colossal Squid–Inspired by the famous Colossal
Squid at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, this
ice cream is a fitting edible tribute to the world’s largest known
squid specimen.
The Auckland Sky Tower–A nod to one of Auckland’s
most iconic landmarks, the Sky Tower ice cream is a public
favourite.
The Hot Chips Ice Cream–A concoction of savoury and
sweet to prove once again there is always more than one way to
experience ice cream.
The Pikorua Ice Cream–The Mʜori symbol of eternal
love is only complete once the two halves are brought together.
To bring all these unique creations to life, the team at
Giapo use a range of techniques, from 3D printing to using liquid
nitrogen. They may have indeed managed to transcend ice cream,
however, quality, seasonality, terroir and provenance are always
the priority behind each and every one of their creations.
Breaking Tradition
What started as a visionary idea has now turned into one
of the most unique ice cream experiences in the world. So, why
did Giapo and Annarosa decide to break away from tradition and
put their own spin on ice cream?
The answer was simple: they wanted to create art that
transcended the traditional beliefs and concepts of dessert and
ice cream, “Now, our ultimate wish is to see others being moti-
vated to challenge the status quo and to break tradition in their
own world. Even if we can just plant the seed in your mind, our
mission will be fulfilled.”
The road they decided to take wasn’t paved with cookie
dough or anything like that. In fact, it was rather rocky and filled
with challenges. As Giapo comments, “People don’t like new
stuff, until they do. It takes time to be understood when you
offer something new. Our biggest challenge came from our own
self-limiting belief that what we were doing was not worth it and
nobody would care about a new way to experience ice cream.
As they say, the enemy is always yourself.”
