Barista & Farmer, The 3 Edition is Won by Greek Barista
rd
Nikolaos Kanakaris, 32 year-old Greek barista from Athens, is the win-
ner of the third edition of Barista & Farmer, the talent show designed
by bar champion Francesco Sanapo, in collaboration with Rimini Fiera
e SIGEP - Salone Internazionale Gelateria Pasticceria e Panificazione
artigianale (International Artisanal Gelato, Pastry and Bread-making
Show).
This year, following stops in Puerto Rico and Honduras, the
event sponsored by the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (Scae)
- the only one dedicated to the promotion and culture of excellent cof-
fee - also stopped in Brazil, in the famous plantations of the company
“O’Coffee”, the largest coffee producer, located in Pedregulho, a region
of the Alta Mogiana region, and near Lambari, in the state of Minas
Gerais.
The theme of the third edition was environmental sustainabil-
ity and the promotion of the coffee production and supply chain. The
participants took part in a process that spanned the full cycle, from the
harvest in the plantation, throughout all the processing stages, with the
use of various technologies, up to the experience of tasting and various
opportunities to consume the product. The main sponsors were La-
vazza, La Cimbali and Faema (the two main brands of Gruppo Cimbali)
and Mumac Academy, the coffee machine academy of the group.
SCAE/SCAA UNIFICATION
At an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held on Monday 23rd May
2016 at the Hilton Hotel, Paddington, London, SCAE President, Paul Stack, an-
nounced that a total of 51% of SCAE members cast their vote on the future of SCAE.
This incredible support for unification led Paul Stack and the SCAE
Board of Directors to act on behalf of all SCAE members and to make the neces-
sary legal changes to ensure the unification can go ahead once SCAA members
have had their say.
Expectation of the vote had originally anticipated a turnout closer to 10%
based on the industry average for trade associations. However, such a high percent-
age of SCAE members voting has been attributed to the significance of what was
being proposed.
Attention will now turn to the SCAA membership as their vote process
gets underway in the coming weeks. Once the SCAA vote is complete and vali-
dated, a formal announcement will be made as to the conclusion of the unification
process.
