Let’s take a walk through the narrow streets of Tokyo. The weather
is warm enough to sit outdoors and bask in the sun with a cup of coffee in
hand before the rainy season descends upon Tokyo and the summer heat
settles in. Tokyo is a city steeped in coffee culture, so we’ll visit some of
its well-loved coffee shops. Besides the obvious that many of these coffee
shops have undeniably good coffee, they also evoke a sense of community,
which is sometimes an impossible feat in a big city.
With a multitude of coffee shops, one might expect there to be com-
petitiveness among coffee establishments; however, what’s noticeable about
Tokyo’s coffee culture is that baristas would frequent each other’s coffee
shops. Unquestioningly, there is room for everyone on the coffee scene
because each shop adds uniqueness to the Tokyo coffee arena.
Like most businesses around the globe, coffee shops in Tokyo have
been impacted by COVID-19. While some have had to close their doors
due to a decline in customers, mainly tourists, many have been resilient
and innovative in their approach to be sustainable. Over the past year, there
have been many approaches to ensuring the safety of patrons. Some coffee
shops have reduced their seat numbers in order to exercise social distanc-
ing, while others have put a limit on the amount of time one can stay at
their shop. But what has become popular is sitting outdoors or getting
coffee to go and opting to stroll around the neighborhood or sit in a park.
 Tokyo’s coffee scene make it
one of the best cities in the
 world for drinking coffee.
