C anadians have a bit of love affair with coffee. Whether it’s the cool-
er weather or the sheer availability of it, Canada is officially ranked
No.1 when calculating the number of liters of coffee per capita they
gulp down. But despite the love of coffee, the average consumer
probably knows relatively little about how it is produced. The seasonal industry
is a volatile market for those farming the beans. With a three-month harvest
season, the market is not sustainable for the farmers, who have to migrate to find
work during the off-season.
It was the opportunity two canadians, Max and Arnaud, had been looking
for. After reading a study about the proven health benefits of Coffee Leaf Tea,
in 2013, the co-founders of Wize Monkey, Max and Arnaud, who were attending
school for their Masters of International Business in Bordeaux, has realized that
the typical coffee farm only has a three-month long harvest season, so what if
the leaf could stabilize their income? At the end of their school year, they de-
cided to investigate the possibility of creating a sustainable business model for
these farmers and pursue this unique project. After three months of visiting
farms, speaking with families, harvesting leaves, and hundreds of mosquito bites,
it all paid off when they came back with the world’s newest resurrection of
Coffee Leaf Tea, and created a new brand called Wize Monkey.
It was launched in November 2014, and since then, has won Best New
Product at the 2015 World Tea Expo and attracted worldwide press with the
local crowd picking up and customers coming from over 35 countries.
As a Co-founder and COO of this innovative brand, Arnaud Petitvallet, a
French-native man who is, as almost every French, passionate about culture,
food, and travel. Through international studies and experiences, he has developed
a deep appreciation for culture and an ethical conscience in his business prac-
tices. His main motivation for co-founding Wize Monkey is to bring the best and
most straight-forward product to customers who deserve to know what’s in their
cup. At this time, we talked to him and after his description, you can find more
about this innovative concept and what it brings to the industries, not only cof-
fee, but tea as well.
