Coffee Consumption
Surges as Ethiopia’s
Economy Improves
Long revered as the birthplace of Coffea arabica, it is thanks to Ethiopia that coffee was brought to the world. Once Ethiopians
decided that they liked coffee as a beverage, coffee cultivation was initiated on a commercial basis. Ethiopians have always liked their
coffee, so much so that for years, up to 60 percent of the country’s production never left the East African country, but was consumed
at home.
As Ethiopia’s economy improves, consumption continues to expand parallel to better spending power. Part II of this series looks
at what drives coffee consumption in Ethiopia, the culture, the unique history and what lies ahead for the future.
