Architecture is an ‘ancient’ industry,
which is also a subject in art for thousands
of years. “Today, we are standing on the
shoulders of those great architects in his- Fun
tory. We study architecture at university TO BREW
and continuously get inspired from every
little thing in our daily life,” Ma confessed.
“Cold and warm, they might be just numbers
of temperature in physics. But when it is
about your feelings, you will find that cold-
ness and warmth can have two different
systems to ‘trigger’ your senses.” As a de-
signer, Ma uses an architecture language
instead of numbers to show the two oppo-
site elements in his design.
“We currently work on a collection of
houses in a smaller size with both cultural
and business values,” Ma shared. “We tend
to spend more time in such less ‘popular’
yet long lasting structures in a slower pace.”
To Atelier Lai, it seems that the value of
design is never about the instant populari-

In 2017, Atelier Lai completed a guest-
house project for vRetreats in Zhejiang
Province. The guesthouse features a coffee
shop, which is a place for people to take a
rest while enjoying the surrounding scenes,
tagged as Warm Pavilion. On the opposite
side, there is a place here tagged as Cold *ODMJOF "3$
Pavilion, where the bubble pool is located.
The contrast in color, material and light
allows the space user to feel the difference
between coldness and warmth with their
senses. Ma shared: “To us, this kind of
projects is more flexible.” In vRetreats,
Atelier Lai aimed to showcase their under-
standing and expression of warmth. “If you
want to show something new in your design,
you have to continue to learn, research, Clan hall (Photo / Xuguo Tang)
explore, develop, and try, regardless of
whether it is right or not,” Ma suggested. This
kind of process and exploration can be seen
through their projects in the past as well.
