Industry Dialogue with the Ministry of Health and Ministry

                    of Agriculture & Agro-Based Industry

8 May 2015, Cafe Malaysia 2015, MATRADE Exhibition & Convention Centre Malaysia

Moderated by Kelvin Ngow, Executive Director of Coffex Coffee Malaysia, The Café Owners Alliance recently
organized an industry dialogue together with representatives from the Malaysian Ministry of Health and the Ministry
of Agriculture & Agro-Based Industry at Café Malaysia 2015.
The dialogue included some important issues that the concerned the Malaysian industry such as health require-
ments for new roastery establishments as well as compulsory food handling certifications for new business owners.
Other discussions about the difficulties of green bean import into the nation was also brought up during the
dialogue, which has been a great concern to many roasters in Malaysia. Many industry professionals have claimed that
the import restrictions have not helped the industry grow in terms of roasting capabilities, a wider selection of green
beans as well as the inability to grow their businesses in a tightly controlled trade market.
Ministry officials discussed and proposed that the alliance bring this matter up to the Ministry of International
Trade and Industry as an association. The ministry officials also pointed out the importance to formulate an association
to deal with the government on official matters.
