Unbranded café
Friendship in a café
Today we take you around Kok Wua intersection to
stroll along this historic street with old, yet charming low-rise
buildings and homes. The reason we are here is we’ve heard
of a friendly and cozy café that turned many coffee heads in
Bangkok into their regular customers. Housed in an old com-
mercial building, the café is interestingly named “unbranded
café” and although it immediately stands out from the rest of
the surrounding buildings, the design of the cafe does fit in with
the overall picture of the area. While it preserves the charm of
the old building, the café looks cool and modern with the use of
wood and raw concrete. Inside, the area is clearly divided into
the dining area upstairs with 4-5 tables, and the bar area down-
stairs where you can get coffee, pastries, and snacks.
Piyawan Kampanyar (Pi), unbranded café’s barista, gave
us a little café history that the building used to be a jewelry shop
before it went out of business. Rose, Pi’s friend and the owner
of Phranakorn Nornlen, talked to Pi about opening a business but I love a challenge.” As the result of the decision, Pi spent tre-
here and they began discussing about the probability of different mendous amount of time at Phranakorn Nornlen to train several
business. “We had a long discussion on what to do here. The first months before the café open. She also took cupping and latte art
idea was to sell something, and everything came down to open- courses as well as went on a café hopping trip around Bangkok
ing a café. It gave me quite a stress because I didn’t drink coffee, to improve her coffee skill.
