                           The Specialty Coffee Association

                           of Panama Issues Statement Against

                           Infused Coffees

On June 19 2024, the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP) issued a statement
regarding the Best of Panama (BOP) competition, which rejected the introduction of
infused coffees in the BOP competition and/or the SCAP.

SCAP stated, ”Given our history and role in the industry, particularly with Panama Geisha
and Panama’s unique coffee heritage, we feel compelled to emphasize the importance of
preserving the authentic identity of Panamanian coffee, especially in competitions like
                           the Best of Panama.”

During the recent 2024 Best of Panama competition, four coffees were found to be altered
from their natural DNA expression. Producers may have altered the flavor of the coffees
with additives in order to achieve high scores.

SCAP has issued a stern statement urging the other competition bodies around the world
to adopt a stance that ensures food safety for consumers and prevents the artificial
homogenization of different terroirs and varieties worldwide. SCAP also believes altered
or infused coffees should be categorized separately, clearly distinguishing them from
coffees that have been processed without the addition of external flavors or ingredients.
