B arcelona’s journey towards becom-
ing a hotspot for “Cafecionados”
Summer time started in 2012, when Right Side set
up a coffee roastery in Castelldefels,

the summer holiday and That same year Marco Bartolomé opened up the
vacation in Barcelona. first spot for specialty coffee under the name
“Satan’s Coffee Corner” in the central district of
El Raval, brewing Right Side exclusively and
selling cups of coffee out of a tiny window. It
was left to the adventurous and eager to find this
hidden spot while visiting Barcelona and it still
took a couple of years for the third wave to take
off. It wasn’t until 2014 that the scene got a bit
more diverse, with Nømad opening the doors to
its roastery and Onna following short thereafter.
Today, Right Side and Nømad are international-
ly recognized and rank among Spain’s finest
coffee roasteries.
While the pioneers of specialty coffee in
Barcelona got inspired on their travels abroad,
by now a distinct specialty coffee niche has been
established locally that caters to the needs of
locals and tourists alike. Another great achieve-
ment has been the launch of the independent
Barcelona Coffee Festival (IBCF) in 2016, which
takes place on a yearly basis. The next edition is
planned for 11 - 13 October 2018.
The best neighborhoods for café hopping
are Gràcia and El Raval, which are both central-
ly located and close to major tourist attractions
but there are also a couple of hidden gems that
are well worth venturing off the beaten track for.
Add these following cafés to your to-do list on
your next trip to Barcelona and you’ll never be
without a great cup of coffee.
