PAVING THE ROAD FORWARD
FOR MALAYSIA
In the recent years, Malaysia have witnessed a significant growth within the international coffee mar-
ketspace. Whether it is in the terms of green bean trading to the hike in numbers of café’s, the demand of coffee
has been increasing gradually annually compared to years ago, before the rise of specialty coffee and the third
wave culture.
Having analyzed this growth, Malaysia has not been far behind compared to neighbouring countries such as
Singapore and Thailand and has seen a tremendous increase in number of café’s as well as the demand of baristas
in the local industry. With this, the specialty coffee market in Malaysia bloomed throughout these last couple of
years across both peninsular and east Malaysia, with the rising demand of supplies as well as higher consumer
awareness to what makes a good cup of cuppa.
With the recent formation of the Malaysia Specialty Coffee Association, the nation has been able to
participate in more international events actively and has also been involved in the ASEAN Coffee Federation to
assist with more growth and development globally.
We here at Coffee T&I spoke to some of the leading roasters, educators, pioneers and professionals in
Malaysia to share their stories on how the market has evolved and asked them how the industry has changed
compared to the last ten years they’ve been in the industry.
