At Starbucks, river of beverages as well as mountain of foods
is provided for its customers every day, but you may wonder
where all the unpurchased foods go at the end of the day. In
fact, Starbucks has been donating unsold pastries to food
banks since 2010 with the help from Food Donation Con-
nection (FDC), a service provider that collects the food at
Starbucks’ stores. However, donating refrigerated, ready-to-
eat meals, such as salads, sandwiches, and Bistro Boxes has
not been put into practice so far due to the logistical issues.
Thus, Starbucks has been required to get rid of its perishable
food items after the assigned expiration date even though
the food could still be consumed. Recently, the company
has announced a way to safely donate perishable food items
under the program called ‘FoodShare’, a collaboration with
FDC and a new partnership with Feeding America, the larg-
est non-profitable hunger-relief organization in the U.S. By
the end of each business day, a refrigerated truck is sent
to Starbucks stores in each zone to pick up unsold, edible
food before delivering it to the Feeding America network.
Starbucks’ Food Share By the end of the first year participating in the FoodShare
program, Starbucks expects to provide nearly 5 million meals
to individuals and families in need. If steadily operating this
program for the next 5 years, Starbucks wish to donate 100%
of its unsold food items daily.
